New Forest Cemetery is non-profit cemetery founded in 1886 in Utica. Over the course of its long history, New Forest has been abandoned and revived twice, making it an excellent candidate for digitization. In collaboration with the Oneida County History Center and the Geosciences Department at Hamilton College, DiSC is creating a digital map of the most visited section of the cemetery, 11b. The georeferenced map was created by Dave Tewksbury through flying a drone over section 11a. Then, DiSC staff and interns gathered data from grave markers and took pictures of each one. The end result is a searchable, geographically accurate map of this section of New Forest Cemetery.
