We're Here to Help!

By Beth Bohstedt

The “About Us” section of our website states our mission and goals. I encourage you to take a look at that, but what it boils down to is that LITS exists to support teaching and learning for students, faculty, and staff at Hamilton.

Many of the ways this happens are “behind the scenes,” and are extremely important (like having access to the internet, Blackboard for your courses, or books on the shelves). In this article, however, I am going to focus on the more public-facing of our services.

There are four primary service desks in Burke Library, all in close proximity to one another. Don’t be shy about asking staff at any one of them for help; if they can’t answer your question, they will point you to the person who can.

The first desk you see, on the left as you enter Burke, is the Circulation & Reserves Desk. The staff and students who manage this area can help you check out materials from the general collection and reserves and show you how to place interlibrary loan requests for items we don't own. They help faculty with putting physical and electronic items on reserve for their classes. This group is also great at directing you to locations in Burke, or to others who can help you with more specific requests. [315-859-4479, askcirc@hamilton.edu]

Just past them is the Help Desk, whose team answers your questions and assists with you with computer problems over the phone, in person or by appointment. The folks at the Help Desk can assist with wireless connectivity problems and email account passwords and setup. Patrons can also bring hardware problems to them for troubleshooting. [315-859-4181, helpdesk@hamilton.edu] (Computer repairs are referred to our on-site vendor, VITEC.)

Walk a few steps forward, past the stairway, and you have arrived at our other two service areas. On the left are the Research Librarians and Research Tutors, who assist with all aspects of the research process, from developing a search strategy to locating resources and citing sources. Their team offers individual course support, as well as programs and workshops.  [315-859-4735, askus@hamilton.edu]

Just to their right are the Digital Media Tutors; these talented student mentors are available to assist you with course-supported projects related to visual literacy and general media related questions. They offer individual working sessions and peer led workshops during the semester. [315-859-5735, askus@hamilton.edu]

The Circulation and Reserves Desk is open whenever the library is (except for the 24/7 period). The other desks have slightly fewer open hours. Please see our Hours and Directions page for more details. All of the staff and students working at these service points are here to help you by facilitating the use of information and technologies in support of your endeavors at Hamilton. We urge you to take advantage of the skills and knowledge they offer!
